In 1982, Mr. Ambika Pada Dev Choudhury, along with Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia, founded the children's magazine Sofura, which was published by Bani Prakash. The launch of Sofura was a significant milestone in the history of Assamese children's magazines. The 1980s were a turbulent time in Assam, significantly impacting people's lives and disrupting youth education. Despite these challenges, the magazine persevered through that tumultuous period. However, in the late 1990s, ‘Xofura’ experienced a pause in its publication. It resumed in 2002 with Dhiraj Goswami as the publisher and Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia returning as the chief editor.
Subsequent editors have included Kumud Goswami, Bhabesh Mahanta and Rupam Barua. The current chief editor of Xofura is Kuladhar Saikia, and the editor is Dhruba Kumar Das.
From its inception, Xofura has been instrumental in fostering reading habits among children. The magazine features various articles, poems, stories, news items, jokes, and letters to the editor. For children, it offers a window to a world of excitement, building their enthusiasm. It also includes a general knowledge and puzzle-solving section to engage young minds. The translated Assamese stories under the title "Phuloni," mostly written by established writers, are both educational and entertaining. The write-ups are complemented by beautiful illustrations.
The magazine is characterised by its reader-friendly approach, creative engagements and reasonable cost. The editorial team consistently focuses on stimulating children’s intellect by providing knowledge on various aspects of life, making ‘Sofura’ a notable magazine.
